Story #15: France v Scotland from the Captain… - Mac and Wild

Story #15: France v Scotland from the Captain…

Ahead of this weekend’s 6 Nations Game against France, we caught up with Scotland Rugby Captain, good friend & Mac & Wild investor, Greig Laidlaw to hear how he’s preparing his side and how he’s adjusted to his new life living and playing rugby in France with a young family in tow.

Q: We’re all looking forward to the Scotland v France game this weekend. Your the captain of Scotland but you live and play in France – what’s your focus over these next few days?

Greig: Our main focus is on our performance for 80 minutes this week. Go out and play our style of rugby and be really accurate in defence and attack.
Q: Have you enjoyed the French move? When & where did you move and how does it differ to your life in Edinburgh?
Greig: Very much enjoyed my French move yes. I moved to Clermont-Ferrand in 2017 where I play for ASM. It is a completely different culture to Scotland but one we are enjoying as a family. It helps when the summer is awesome so the kids are outside from end March through October – that wasn’t always (often) the case in Scotland!
Q: Is there any classic style to French rugby that differs from Scotland?
Greig: In terms of the rugby it will differ slightly as France are a big side focussing on power a lot of the time. We are more about speed and skill.
Q: Any French players you see as a significant threat to the Scotland game plan?
Greig: Damian Penaud is a very dangerous player who I actually play with for Clermont. We can’t afford to give him any time and space on Saturday.
Q: Scottish v French cuisine…discuss?
Greig: Greig declined to elaborate on this point – opting instead to send us 2 emojis with hands over eyes. We gather that means he’s approving of the meat & cheese heavy cuisine of Clermont’s Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. We don’t blame him! Sure he’s missing a deep fried mars bar from time to time though.
Q: Are you handy in the kitchen or more of a twice a year kind of guy – any signature dish?
Greig: I like cooking yes. As long as I have the time. I like cooking up a spaghetti bolognese for all the family. And love a BBQ in summer!
From everyone here at M&W, good luck to Greig & the boys. Come on Scotland!
